Boeing, engineers reach tentative agreement on 6-year contract

Boeing Co. and the union that represents 20,000 of its engineers and technical workers have reached a tentative agreement on a six-year contract extension.

The pact, which covers wage increases, retirement benefits and other issues, would help avoid a costly showdown later this year and guarantee labor peace for the Chicago-based aviation and defense company into the next decade.

Boeing, which makes the headquarters of defense division in the St. Louis area, has experienced contentious negotiations with organized labor in the past, and the plane maker is looking to shift away from short-term deals that have put it at frequent risk of strikes.

Ballots will be sent to union members next week, and votes will be counted Feb. 10.
