KC school board names new superintendent

The Kansas City school board announced Wednesday the unanimous selection of Mark T. Bedell as the new district superintendent.

Bedell, who previously served as assistant superintendent for high schools at Baltimore County Public Schools in Towson, Md., said he’s more than up for the challenge of helping transform the district.

Bedell will take the reins of a non-accredited district with shrinking enrollment, low test scores and a less than 70 percent graduation rate.

Assuming smooth contract negotiations, Bedell is slated to start in July.
