Boeing mulls moving manufacturing to India

St. Louis-based Boeing is considering moving production of its F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets to India, according to comments CEO Dennis Muilenburg reportedly made during his first visit to the country.

The Hindustan Times reports that Muilenburg said discussions about manufacturing the planes in India are ongoing as part of Boeing’s strategy to invest “billions of dollars” in the country.

Muilenburg said there is not an official offer, just a “conversation we are having with interested parties right now.”

Boeing’s F/A-18 production line in St. Louis is currently slated to close at the end of 2017. The Pentagon’s new five-year budget proposal reportedly includes more than $1 billion in new aircraft orders from Boeing, which could help extend the life of the production line.
