Lawmakers vote to strip UM System of funding increase

The University of Missouri System was stripped of the governor’s recommended $26.8 million performance funding increase by a legislative committee Wednesday.

Chairwoman Donna Lichtenegger (R-Jackson) proposed the cuts and said it’s because, in part, of how University officials responded to protests and dealt with embattled professor Melissa Click, who was seen on video asking for “some muscle” to keep a student reporter away from protesters on campus last fall.

“I think they need to start showing some leadership,” said Lichtenegger.

Rep. Stephen Webber (D-Columbia) called the move “retaliatory,” saying the cut “is not going to be felt by the administration that people are frustrated with, [but] by students by way of higher fees and reduced educational opportunities.”

The budget now moves to the full House Budget Committee for consideration.
