The Laclede Group, a natural gas utility that has served the St. Louis region for more than 150 years, announced it will rebrand itself as Spire in an effort to unify several businesses recently acquired by the utility under one name.
With new employees gained from acquisitions, and the prospect of future growth, it made sense to put everything under one umbrella, Laclede CEO Suzanne Sitherwood said in an interview.
Marketing executives for the St. Louis-based utility said Spire also better reflects the company it is becoming after growing its geographic reach and adding nearly a million natural gas customers in the past three years. The Laclede Group is now the fifth-largest publicly traded natural gas company in the country.
Shareholders are slated to vote to change the name to Spire at a special meeting April 28. Upon approval, the company that currently trades under the stock ticker symbol ‘LG’ will begin trading as ‘SR’ on the New York Stock Exchange effective April 29.
