UM System campuses in St. Louis, Columbia to see layoffs

Job cuts are coming to the University of Missouri System campuses in St. Louis and Columbia.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis budget and planning committee on Monday approved plans to eliminate 85 positions and make other cuts in an effort to save $15 million.

News of looming layoffs surfaced earlier this year. UMSL Chancellor Tom George proposed the two-year spending reduction last week, and he plans to make a final decision on cuts by month’s end.

In Columbia, MU operations will eliminate 50 positions through attrition and layoffs as the school braces for a $5.47 million budget cut for Fiscal 2017. MU also will see reductions in certain campus services as a result of the cuts.

The news follows a March announcement by Interim Chancellor Hank Foley that the school was instituting a hiring freeze and budget reductions.
