Express Scripts Holding Co. will cut Massachusetts-based pharmacy startup PillPack Inc. from its pharmacy network at the end of the month, shutting a thousands of customers out of its network.
TJ Parker, co-founder and CEO of PillPack, told the Wall Street Journal that the move resulted from Express Scripts’ feeling a “threat” to its mail-order pharmacy business from the startup company.
Express Scripts officials said PillPack represents itself as a retail pharmacy but is actually a mail-order pharmacy and is violating Express Scripts’ network rules.
“We think PillPack is very innovative. We would like to have them in our network. We’d also like them to be who they say they are,” said Brian Henry, spokesman for Express Scripts. PillPack was part of Express Scripts’ network since September 2013.
