UnitedHealth cutting individual insurance plans in Missouri

UnitedHealth Group Inc., the nation’s largest health insurer, will cease selling individual medical insurance plans in Missouri next year. The move includes plans offered through the federal government’s health insurance exchange.

Word of the decision comes after UnitedHealth’s CEO told investors Tuesday that the company would only offer exchange health plans in a handful of states after offering them in 34 this year.

The Minnesota-based insurer said losses were a reason it’s exiting the individual exchanges. The online exchanges are a key piece of President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, enabling consumers to compare and purchase plans online.
