St. Louis a frontrunner for MLS expansion

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber said Thursday that St. Louis is one of two cities that are top candidates to score a team in the league’s next expansion round.

He said the other cities being considered, in order of priority, were Sacramento; Detroit; San Diego; San Antonio; Austin, Texas; and Cincinnati.

A group of local business and sports leaders, including St. Louis Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III and St. Louis Blues CEO Chris Zimmerman, was formed earlier this year to help bring a MLS team to St. Louis. The group is working with the St. Louis Sports Commission to conduct market research on potential team owners, stadium sites and funding options.
