Streetcars have been running along the new downtown Kansas City route for several months, but on Friday, the public will finally get its chance to try them out.
As many as 50,000 people are expected downtown Friday and Saturday for a whole host of festivities and activities associated with the streetcar grand opening.
The official ceremony to launch the new streetcar system begins at 10 a.m. at Union Station with speeches and an inaugural first ride for city and federal dignitaries. Public ridership begins at 11 a.m. and continues until 2 a.m. Saturday. Rides on the streetcar will be free of charge through the following weekend.
Local businesses will also take advantage of the uptick in downtown foot traffic with specials and sales. Sporting KC will host a party with Boulevard Brewing Co., Plowboys Barbecue will offer free samples and Michael’s Fine Clothing for Men will hold a 20 percent off storewide sale. See a full list of offerings here.
Information on the “Smart City” initiative along the route, including interactive kiosks and free public WiFi, will also be available to the public.
