Silpada Designs announces closure, cites outdated business model

Lenexa-based Silpada Designs, a multimillion-dollar silver jewelry company, announced on Tuesday its plan to close in July.

Silpada says it succumbed to an outdated business model – jewelry sales parties hosted at home – that had become unsustainable, though it was still profitable.

Andrea Carroll, Silpada’s vice president of design, said the company’s revenue had been falling for six years, down as much as 30 percent.

The announcement shocked Silpada representatives, who have also shrunk to a mere 15,000 from roughly twice that total at its peak.

Silpada said its independent sales representatives will have through July 31 to sell Silpada jewelry and earn commissions.
