Bill Thompson to retire as leader of SSM Health

After nearly five years at the helm of SSM Health, Bill Thompson will retire as CEO next year.

Thompson was the first lay leader of the Creve Coeur-based Catholic health system in 2011 after founding CEO Sister Mary Jean Ryan transitioned to chairwoman of the board.

Thompson, 65, will remain in his role until a successor is named, the health system announced Wednesday.

“This was not an easy decision. However, after much reflection and deliberation, I feel it is time to begin transitioning to the next chapter in my life,” Thompson said in a statement.
