St. Louis medical device startup MediBeacon acquires German company

Creve Coeur-based medical startup MediBeacon has acquired Mannheim Pharma, a German life science company, marking MediBeacon’s first foray into animal health. Terms of the deal between were not disclosed.

Founded in 2012 by Steve Hanley and Rick Dorshow, MediBeacon makes monitoring systems that track kidney function and other health diagnostics.

Mannheim Pharma makes a device for measuring kidney function in animals that has not been approved for humans. The company says the device enhances assessments of kidney therapeutics, nephrotoxicity and basic understanding of animal kidney functions.

MediBeacon will be adding three full-time employees as a result of the acquisition.

Last year, the company raised more than $22 million from Virginia-based Pansend LLC. Past MediBeacon investors include BioGenerator, Jump Capital, Missouri Technology Corp., the St. Louis Development Corp. and St. Louis County’s Helix Fund.
