Retailer Total Hockey files for bankruptcy

Total Hockey, the Maryland Heights-based retailer that touted its growth in the past several years, has filed for bankruptcy protection in a move that may lead to a sale of the company.

The 32-store chain, founded in 1999, filed for Chapter 11 Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. The company said its liabilities are $50 million to $100 million, including $32 million in unsecured debt, and its assets are $10 million to $50 million.

Two affiliate firms of Total Hockey, Players Bench Corp. and Hipcheck LLC, also filed bankruptcy. Hipcheck LLC is the corporate parent of Total Hockey Inc.; Player’s Bench Corp. is owned by Total Hockey.

Bids from other buyers are being considered, and an auction will be held for Total Hockey’s assets, pending court approval. A hearing to approve payment for employees’ wages during bankruptcy proceedings and other first day motions is slated for Friday morning.
