Are Laclede Gas rates too high? Missouri regulators will decide

A complaint filed by Missouri’s utility customer advocate that accused Laclede Gas of generating excess profits will proceed after the Missouri Public Service Commission denied Laclede’s motion to dismiss the case Tuesday.

The Missouri Office of Public Counsel, which represents ratepayers, filed the formal complaint against natural gas utilities Laclede Gas and sister company Missouri Gas Energy in April. Both companies are owned by St. Louis-based Spire, which recently changed its name from the Laclede Group.

The complaint says rates should be adjusted at Laclede, which serves much of the St. Louis region, and Missouri Gas, which serves Kansas City and parts of southwest Missouri, because profits are significantly higher than the industry average.

Spire has called the complaint “blatantly wrong” and said it was timed for political reasons.
