Missouri Poaches Freightquote from Kansas With Millions in Tax Incentives

KANSAS CITY – Freightquote.com is heading across the state border to greener pastures.

With an offer of $7 million in BUILD tax credits, Missouri succeeded in luring the online freight shipper—and 980 jobs—from Freightquote’s Lenexa, Kan., headquarters to Kansas City, Mo., the Kansas City Business Journal reports.

In its new home in Missouri, Freightquote will also be eligible for the Missouri Quality Jobs Program, which provides tax breaks and credits for companies that claim to bring jobs to the state. Freightquote’s incentive from the Missouri Quality Jobs program is estimated at $26.2 million, according to the Journal.

The Missouri Quality Jobs program received the lowest rating possible in a recent audit by Missouri State Auditor Thomas Schweich.

Schweich ripped the program for not creating the jobs it was supposed to. He also faulted the Missouri Department of Economic Development, which administrates the program, for poor record keeping and failing to hold companies under the program accountable for the information they provide.
