Following tough year, UMSL awards record number of degrees

The University of Missouri-St. Louis closed out its rocky fiscal year on a positive note, setting a record for the number of degrees awarded and posting its third-highest fundraising total in school history.

A record 3,199 students received degrees during the 2016 fiscal year in graduation ceremonies in May, August and December, including 632 underrepresented minority students — also an UMSL record.

UMSL also recorded a strong fundraising year, bringing in $27 million, Chancellor Thomas George said, indicating that alumni are generally willing to stick by a school even in the face of controversy.

UMSL spent much of the school year reeling from an unexpected drop in enrollment. School leaders were expecting a 2 percent increase but instead got a 4 percent decrease.

As a result, UMSL spent the majority of the school year bracing for an estimated $15 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year that began July 1.
