Where Columbia and Jefferson City Beat KC and STL: Economic Growth

Missouri’s two biggest cities arguably get the most attention in state business circles, but pardon mid-Missouri while it steals Kansas City’s and St. Louis’s spotlight for a moment. In a feature in Area Development Magazine ranking of the Top 100 Metropolitan Statistical Areas of 2012 for economic growth, Columbia placed 10th and Jefferson City 39th out of 365 MSAs nationwide. St. Joseph is the only other MSA on the list centering around a Missouri city, finishing 56th.

The criteria for Area Deveopment‘s selection process included 23 economic indicators in all, among them unemployment rate of change, per-capita GDP, highest degree level attained by workforce and more.
