Hack of former DST business exposes Blue KC data

Newkirk Products Inc. reported a security breach of personal information for health insurance ID cards, including those for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City.

The breach did not gain access to Social Security numbers or information related to banking or credit cards, medical history or claims, Newkirk said in a press release Friday.

What was accessed was information found on the Blue KC cards, such as the member’s name and mailing address, said Kelly Cannon, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City-based insurance company.

The only information about Blue KC members on the server was whatever would be on the cards, Cannon said, so the breach is “extremely limited.”
