AT&T says it has begun offering ultra-fast “gigabit” internet service to homes in parts of the St. Louis area.
The service, which is 10 to 20 times faster than broadband service, is available immediately to homes and businesses in parts of St. Louis, St. Charles and University City, the Dallas-based company said. AT&T plans to expand to more areas by the end of this year.
Gigabit service requires that fiber cable be extended to the home, replacing the phone wire that often carries AT&T’s current “U-Verse” broadband service.
Gigabit and higher service became available to Kansas City-area businesses in June.
