VA claims progress on hospital wait times, but report shows some issues persist

Veterans Affairs officials say they’re making progress towards shorter wait times at VA hospitals across the state, but statistics suggest some challenges remain.

In its latest report, the Department of Veterans Affairs shows that of all appointments scheduled at facilities across Missouri, most are scheduled within 30 days.

In St. Louis, although 95 percent of appointments are scheduled within 30 days, that’s slightly worse than in 2014, when uproar over wait times for some veterans led to a federal law allowing them to seek care elsewhere, St. Louis Public Radio reports.

Wait times for mental health care, primary care and specialist care varied across the state, with St. Louis and Columbia having the longest patient wait times for primary care and specialist care, respectively.
