St. Louis unionized painters who went on strike last week in a wage dispute with contractors returned to work Tuesday despite the absence of a new contract.
About 1,400 members of Painters District Council 58 set up pickets Thursday after their three-year contract expired. Picketing was limited to the offices of contractors who belong to the Painting and Decorating Foundation.
Dan Wienstroer, the foundation’s executive director, said the unionized painters returned to work Tuesday. No union official responded to a request to discuss the dispute with contractors.
Wienstroer said the two sides were scheduled to meet Wednesday with a federal mediator.
