Kansas City-based St. Luke’s Health System has confirmed its plan to operate a micro hospital in Overland Park, Kan.
The 17,000-square-foot facility, equipped with an emergency room and just eight beds for overnight stays, is designed to fill a niche between retail clinics and big hospitals.
St. Luke’s says it plans to open more such facilities in the Kansas City area, but hospital spokeswoman Laurel Gifford said it wasn’t ready to confirm additional details.
The mini hospital trend is emerging around the country as a 24-hour alternative to using emergency rooms at large hospitals.
