Missouri sports marketer Learfield sold to investment firm Atairos

Learfield Communications Inc., a Jefferson City-based college sports marketing agency, has been acquired by Atairos Group Inc., a New York-based private investment firm.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. But Providence Equity Partners, the Rhode Island-based firm that bought Learfield in 2013, was expected to fetch between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion for the sale, according to the SportsBusiness Journal.

Learfield was founded in 1972 as the Missouri Network. Today, it helps with sponsorships and licensing deals for more than 120 institutions, including the University of Missouri.
