Sprint plans to raise $3.5B through sale-leaseback of airwaves

Sprint Corp. announced Wednesday that it’s mortgaging about 14 percent of its wireless airwaves, which is expected to raise billions of dollars.

The airwaves are worth about $16.4 billion, but the Overland Park, Kan.-based wireless carrier is counting on raising about $3.5 billion initially, according to Sprint’s Tokyo-based parent company, SoftBank Group.

This isn’t the first time that Sprint has resorted to sale-leaseback deals. In November, Sprint raised about $1.2 billion through a sale-leaseback deal on handsets, and in April, the wireless carrier raised about $2.2 billion by using its network assets as collateral.
