MC Sports files for bankruptcy, will close five Missouri stores

Sporting goods chain MC Sports is shuttering all of its stores, including five locations across Missouri.

The Michigan-based company, known legally as Michigan Sporting Goods Distributors, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week.

The retailer has stores in Branson, Columbia, Springfield, St. Joseph and Warrensburg.

It employs more than 1,300 full-time and part-time associates at its 68 stores throughout seven states in the Midwest.

President and CEO Bruce Ullery said in a bankruptcy filing that the company’s business “like many of its peers in the sporting goods retail space, has been impacted by adverse business trends, including the rapid migration of sales from traditional brick and mortar retailers to online resellers, the expansion of competing distribution channels and specialty retailers, and changing consumer preferences.”

The chain, which was founded in 1946, reported a net loss of $5.4 million on sales of $174.6 million in its most recent fiscal year, according to a filing.
