Developer assesses damage as investigators determine cause of KC apartment blaze

Kansas City developer Ken Block is taking stock of the damage around one of his company’s prized projects after a fire Monday afternoon burned one apartment building to the ground and severely damaged another at the CityPlace complex under construction in Overland Park, Kansas.

With CityPlace, Block Real Estate Services aims to turn long-vacant ground into a mixed-use project that Block liked to describe as a city within a city.

Fire officials have released new details in Monday’s 8-alarm fire, which started at The Royale at CityPlace Apartments and damaged about two dozen homes.

Investigators ruled the fire as an accident and said that building material caught fire as a welder worked on site.

Three firefighters had minor injuries, but no serious injuries or fatalities were reported.
