Springfield sees hotel construction boom amid string of strong lodging years

A new Moxy hotel proposed for downtown Springfield isn’t the only new place of lodging in the works.

Elsewhere in Springfield, four new hotels are currently under construction. Work on a fifth is slated to begin in the coming months.

The additions include a mix of familiar brands and those new to the Springfield market. And they arrive following a string of good years for the city’s lodging industry.

Visitors spent a record amount staying at Springfield hotels in 2016, for the third year in a row. Tracy Kimberlin, president and CEO of the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the trend is expected to continue in 2017.

Since the recession, Kimberlin said, “the travel industry has come back very strong, both here in Springfield and nationally.”
