An agreement between the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Truman Medical Center, Children’s Mercy Hospital and other local partners seeks to unite Kansas City’s Hospital Hill area into the “UMKC Health Sciences District.”
Heads of the respective institutions say this agreement signals increased cooperation in the areas of research, recruiting and security and isn’t simply a rebranding of the area.
A 20-person board of directors will be appointed first, after which leaders of the agreement say they will tackle the issue of making parking more user-friendly for the 16,000 customers of the area.
Two hospitals, as well as the UMKC medical, nursing, pharmacy and dentistry schools, will be housed in the district. So will the Missouri Department of Mental Health’s Center for Behavioral Medicine and the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“By working together we make ourselves more competitive to recruit top talent to the region,” said Steven Kanter, the dean of the UMKC School of Medicine. “That of course leads to a number of other advantages.”
