3M plans $40 million expansion of Springfield facility

Manufacturer 3M will begin a $40 million expansion of its operation in Springfield, the Minnesota-based company announced Wednesday.

The project, focusing on the company’s adhesives and tapes division, is expected to increase the plant’s workforce by about 90 people in the next several years. The company currently employs 330 people in the Springfield area.

Last year, the Springfield City Council approved a deal for 3M granting a 75 percent property tax abatement for 10 years on the value added by the expansion. Normally, the city provides only a 50 percent exemption on property taxes.

The state will also give 3M Missouri Works and Missouri Works Training incentives and an incentive from City Utilities that will grant a discount on utility costs.
