The University of Missouri System began a round of layoffs Wednesday at its Columbia headquarters that appears to target lobbying and public relations personnel.
Several sources confirmed numerous layoffs in the 18-person university relations department, which houses federal and state lobbyists, the custodian of records and nine communications employees.
The layoffs come before an expected Friday announcement from UM System president Mun Choi on the final amount of budget cuts at the system and all four campuses: Columbia, Rolla, St. Louis and Kansas City.
Earlier this year, Choi said that all system campuses should prepare to cut between 8 percent and 12 percent of their budgets.
