Cardinals promote general manager Mozeliak with eye on long-range planning

John Mozeliak has been promoted to president of baseball operations for the St. Louis Cardinals, the team announced Friday. He had been senior vice president and general manager.

Mike Girsch, who was serving as assistant general manager, was named Mozeliak’s replacement. Girsch has been with the team since 2006.

The move will allow Girsch to focus on day-to-day operations while Mozeliak looks toward developing long-range planning and strategic initiatives, said Cardinals Chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt, Jr., in a news conference.

Both Mozeliak and Girsch have received new contracts that run through the 2020 season.
