St. Louis’ tech workforce growing slower than other cities

St. Louis’ tech talent pool grew by roughly 8 percent between 2011 and 2016, a growth rate that is far slower than most other large cities, according to data in CBRE’s annual Tech Talent Report.

The tech talent pool in Kansas City grew by 39.1 percent in that same period, which compared favorably with other Midwestern cities of a similar size.

Of the 50 markets analyzed by the CBRE report, only two markets grew less than 10 percent — St. Louis and Washington, D.C. (9.6 percent).

St. Louis does, however, have a larger tech talent pool than most of the listed cities with roughly 52,000 tech workers, which CBRE defines as those working as software developers and programmers; computer support, database and systems; technology and engineering related; and computer and information system managers.

Overall, St. Louis ranks as the 35th best tech market. An interactive mapping graphic from CBRE can be found here.
