School in session means surge in business for growing Varsity Tutors

It’s August, and Varsity Tutors is bustling with new employees.

The Clayton-based technology company matches students with tutors, and its business doubles each year between July and September. It has hired 194 people, mostly sales representatives and tutor support personnel, since April to gear up for the rush.

These aren’t seasonal jobs. Varsity Tutors’ business does slow down over the summer, but it has grown dramatically since the company built out its online platform. The company’s employment in the St. Louis area has tripled, to 115 people, since late 2015. It has 450 total employees, with other offices in Phoenix, Seattle and Victoria, British Columbia.

The company’s business has also undergone a transformation. A year and a half ago, most tutoring sessions were done in person. Now the vast majority occur virtually, with tutor and pupil making a video connection through Varsity’s website or mobile app.

Varsity’s 33,000 tutors, who are independent contractors, have provided more than 2 million hours of academic instruction, and the 10-year-old company has already nearly filled its 20,000-square-foot Clayton office, which was mostly empty when it moved in 15 months ago.
