A year after Amazon opened its two fulfillment centers in Edwardsville, Illinois, the e-commerce company has blown past its initial employee projections for the suburban St. Louis facilities.
When it announced the facilities last year, the Seattle-based company said it planned to create 1,000 jobs at the sites, located about 20 miles northeast of downtown St. Louis.
Combined, the two facilities now employ 2,200 workers and there are still job openings, managers said during a tour of one of the buildings Thursday. More than 1,500 of those jobs are full-time.
More Amazon jobs are on the way in the St. Louis area. Last month, the company announced it will open its first Missouri facility at the Hazelwood Logistics Center by the end of the year and will employ 350 part-time workers.
