Freebirds franchises shutter in quick succession

Freebirds World Burrito is shuttering many of its stores in Missouri and Kansas.

The fast-casual burrito chain’s location in Kansas City’s Westport district shut down earlier this month. The Austin, Texas-based chain also shuttered two Wichita, Kan. locations last week.

Freebirds entered the Kansas City market in 2012 with the Westport location, as well as restaurants in Lee’s Summit and Mission, Kansas. Locations in Columbia; Lawrence, Kansas; and Overland Park, Kansas opened in 2013.

But the Lawrence location closed in 2014 with the company saying it didn’t have an “active following” and never met the company’s expectations. The Columbia location also reportedly closed that year and the Lee’s Summit location closed in early 2016.

Freebirds now lists only two Kansas City area stores as operating.

The chain, which also has 62 restaurants in Texas and 14 in California, continues to open other locations nationwide.
