After 18 years leading the St. Louis area’s largest employer, BJC HealthCare CEO Steve Lipstein plans to retire from the health care provider at year’s end. Rich Liekweg, who has worked for the organization since 2009 and currently serves as president of BJC, will take over as chief executive.

The nonprofit health care provider’s board has been working on a succession plan for several years. Liekwig will become the third CEO of BJC, which employs more than 31,000 people and operates 15 hospitals in Missouri and Illinois.

Lipstein was named CEO in 1999, just a few years after BJC HealthCare was created by merging a number of local hospitals under one umbrella.
