Varsity Tutors, a Clayton-based company that matches students with private instructors, announced Thursday that it has bought British company First Tutors.
The acquisition marks the start of an international expansion for Varsity Tutors, according to a company press release.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
First Tutors works as a matching service, charging a one-time introduction fee when it matches a tutor with a pupil. Varsity Tutors has evolved into an online learning platform, and says the vast majority of its tutoring sessions occur via a video link using its website or mobile app.
Chuck Cohn founded Varsity Tutors in 2007 while he was a student at Washington University in St. Louis. The company raised $50 million of venture capital in 2015 and now employs 115 people at its Clayton headquarters.
