John Kemper to succeed father as Commerce Bancshares CEO

Commerce Bancshares President and COO John Kemper will replace his father, David Kemper, as chief executive of the bank holding company, effective Aug. 1.

John Kemper, 40, joined the bank in 2007 and became COO in 2013.

David Kemper, 67, has led Commerce since 1988. He will remain active in the bank’s management as executive chairman.

John Kemper has a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from Stanford University, a Master of Science in economic history from the London School of Economics and an MBA from Northwestern University.

Commerce had $24.8 billion in assets as of Dec. 31 and operates more than 330 locations across the Midwest.
