Sports leagues, lawmakers weigh plans to legalize sports betting

With a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the horizon that could overturn a federal ban on sports betting, Missouri lawmakers are weighing plans to legalize and regulate gambling on sports in the state.

In both Missouri and Kansas, lawmakers are considering bills that would legalize sports betting in casinos. Some bills would allow sports betting online.

Amid the legislative rush to address sports betting, both the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball have expressed a desire to help shape laws around the issue. Both leagues have seven lobbyists in Missouri.

Reps. Dean Plocher, R-St. Louis, and Justin Alferman, R-Hermann, both are sponsoring bills to allow sports betting in Missouri.

Supporters of legalizing sports betting in the state argue that the wagers are already being made to the tune of $150 billion per year, and that legalizing sports gambling will create revenue for states.
