Sprint, T-Mobile said to restart merger talks

Sprint’s on-again, off-again flirtation with rival T-Mobile is on again. Again. That’s according to a report published Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the matter.

For the third time in four years, Overland Park, Kansas-based Sprint, the No. 4 wireless carrier in the U.S., is said to be considering a tie-up with T-Mobile, the No. 3 wireless provider. The companies’ last negotiations collapsed in November when they couldn’t agree on executive control of the combined entity, according to reports at the time.

Those issues have not been resolved in the interim, a person familiar with the matter said, and it’s unclear what terms the companies are discussing.

The failed deal proposed last year has left Sprint alone to face challenges including investing billions annually in network upgrades, paying down billions of dollars of debt and gaining subscribers in a competitive wireless market.
