Save-A-Lot plans new headquarters in St. Louis suburbs

Save-A-Lot, the discount supermarket chain based in the St. Louis area, plans to move its headquarters about five miles to the west, from Earth City to St. Ann.

The company said it would add 64 new jobs and retain 450 employees with the move to a 125,000-square-foot space at the site of the old Northwest Plaza.

The move hinges on approval of tax subsidies from state and county government. St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger has requested a 50 percent abatement of Save-A-Lot’s personal property taxes for 15 years and a one-time abatement of sales tax on new equipment. Those breaks would be worth about $800,000.

The state would provide up to $3 million through the Missouri Works program and $85,000 through Skilled Workforce Missouri to support the move.

The St. Louis County Council tabled the proposal last week until it could hear from representatives of the Pattonville School District and an EMS and fire protection district. Both stand to lose tax revenue in the deal.
