Sinclair to sell off St. Louis TV station as part of Tribune purchase

Sinclair Broadcast Group said Tuesday it will sell 23 television stations, including KPLR, the CW affiliate in St. Louis, to win regulatory approval of its $3.9 billion acquisition of Tribune Media Co.

Des Moines-based Meredith Co., which already owns KMOV, the CBS affiliate in St. Louis, will buy KPLR for $65 million.

As part of its Tribune purchase, Maryland-based Sinclair, the country’s largest broadcaster, will acquire KTVI, the Fox affiliate in St. Louis. It already owns KDNL, the market’s ABC affiliate.

Meredith’s $65 million deal will be funded with cash and is expected to close at the same time as the Sinclair-Tribune deal.
