Jobs, market share on the line in Shop ‘n Save sale

As Shop ‘n Save’s parent company looks to sell off the Kirkwood-based grocery chain, the fates of some 3,300 area employees and fortunes of other local supermarkets hang in the balance.

For a glimpse of how things might play out, analysts point to what has happened since Supervalu, the Eden Prairie, Minnesota-based company that owns Shop ‘n Save, agreed to sell Farm Fresh, a Virginia-based supermarket chain.

Supervalu agreed to sell 21 of its 38 Farm Fresh stores to three other grocers. Its other stores, which have no buyers, remain in limbo. Sine March, more than 3,000 Farm Fresh employees have been given termination papers.

Analysts say a similar situation could unfold in the St. Louis area: the jobs of Shop ‘n Save’s 3,300 area employees are at risk, and Maryland Heights-based Schnucks and Chesterfield-based Dierbergs could gobble up stores if Supervalu decides to sell them off in small numbers.
