Compensation for faculty and staff, budget cuts and an academic program review were among the major topics addressed Monday during a talk by Mun Choi, president of the University of Missouri System, and Alexander Cartwright, chancellor of MU’s campus in Columbia.
Choi said the biggest improvement the university system needs to make is increasing compensation to help retain faculty and staff. He said he’s asked campus and system leaders to build a 2 percent performance increase into the 2019 budget pool.
The system president also said he anticipates continued budget challenges in the year ahead, despite state lawmakers restoring funding for the UM System this year that had been cut by Gov. Eric Greitens.
Cartwright said his plan of doubling research funding at the university cannot happen without investment in infrastructure.
The chancellor also addressed potential cuts to academic programs, saying he is currently reviewing information on possible cuts and will make decisions by May 16.
