Square plans to double St. Louis space, hire 300

Square, the mobile payments company founded by two St. Louis natives, plans to double its footprint and headcount in St. Louis, hiring 300 employees in the city over the next five years.

That would make St. Louis the company’s largest office outside of its headquarters in San Francisco.

Square, which was founded by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey in 2009, plans to lease an additional 56,000 square feet of office space in the Cortex Innovation District, giving it approximately 100,000 square feet of space and 600 employees in the district.

Square could receive up to $1.8 million in state tax incentives for the move.

Most of the company’s employees in St. Louis work in compliance and customer support.
