Fontbonne University lays off 10 percent of employees amid enrollment decline

Fontbonne University in St. Louis laid off 27 employees last week, or about 10 percent of its workforce, the university’s president confirmed.

Michael Pressimone, Fontbonne’s president, said annual cost savings from the cuts would total about $1.3 million. No academic programs were eliminated or restructured, and the savings will be reinvested in academics, Pressimone said.

Layoffs were mostly to administrative employees. No tenure-track faculty members lost their jobs.

The liberal arts Catholic school has an enrollment of about 1,375 and has seen that number decline by several hundred in recent years. The university wants to boost enrollment to 2,000 by 2020.
