St. Louis construction firm addresses worker shortage with interns

Byrne & Jones, a construction firm based in the St. Louis suburb of Earth City, had grown weary of finding engineering and project management hires through career websites and recruiters, so it took matters into its own hands. The company decided to cultivate its own talent from within by hiring college interns and giving them oversight of major projects and other key responsibilities.

One intern was tasked with updating Byrne & Jones’ HR system. Another designed a track and turf field at an Illinois high school. Still another was the key decision maker at a mall construction project.

Britt Taulbee, an executive vice president at Byrne & Jones, said the program aims to help the company identify students who could run a business in the future.

Even though some interns wind up going to work for other firms, Byrne & Jones said about half end up coming back for full-time jobs with the company.
