The University of Missouri System plans to fight a court ruling that would require it to recognize graduate student workers as employees and to bargain with their union.
On Friday, UM System President Mun Choi reiterated his view that student workers are not employees and said the system intends to appeal a court decision on the issue that was handed down Thursday.
MU has not recognized the Coalition of Graduate Workers, a group formed by graduate students for collective bargaining, as a union despite a 2016 vote in which 84 percent of graduate workers who voted supported unionization. About 30 percent of graduate workers turned out for that vote.
