Mercy Health pilots program to give nurses summer off

Mercy Health in St. Louis will begin offering a program that lets some nurses take summers off. The pilot program aims to alleviate overstaffing during the summer months, when patient volume tends to drop.

Last summer, Mercy saw nurses leave because they couldn’t get enough hours, according to managers. The new policy seeks to reverse that problem.

Usually, when patient volume dwindles, nurses are told to stay home. But nurses don’t get paid when they’re at home, so some use paid time off during slow stretches. However, that led to some running out of PTO by summer’s end.
